Bailey 1 Broc BaileyProfessor Fatima Lim-WilsonEnglish 1015 December 2018Vaccines: The truth about the pharmaceutical industryBJ Palmer once said that “the power that created the body heals the body”. What he meant by this is that, the human body was made to heal itself through creating antibodies to viruses the body encounters naturally. Vaccines have started changing the way humans have always fought disease. However, the current vaccine scheduling in the United State is not founded by science. There are also political conflicts of interest that merit the obtainment of money and not the health of society. One of the largest lobbyers in Congress today is the pharmaceutical industry. In 1982, the pharmaceutical industry blackmailed Congress by threatening to stop the sales of vaccinesin America unless a law was passed that would shield them from prosecution. (Mercola). They did this because the families whose children had an adverse reaction to the vaccines were suing the pharmaceutical companies. For the most part, the families would win in court and the pharmaceutical industry was going bankrupt from payouts. Since the pharmaceutical companies could not turn a dollar on vaccinations while the payouts almost equaled their totalsales, they came together to blackmail Congress. Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, granting the pharmaceutical industry immunity from any prosecution that had to do with adverse reactions to vaccinations. With this came the Vaccination Adverse Event Reporting System, also known as the VAERS court system. This was put in place to monitor the chance of risk in vaccines. If a vaccine had a high risk of causing an adverse reaction, they would take it off the market due to the amount of money the
Bailey 2 VAERS court system would have to pay out to the affected families. Now the VAERS court system has its own account for pay out money that is not funded by the government. The pharmaceutical companies fund it via taking a percentage out of each vaccine sale. This is an example of conflict of interest because the pharmaceutical companies must fund an account for payouts to adversely affected children while knowing all along that the vaccines can have that effect. “The pharmaceutical industry has control of scientific journals, censor’s intellectual freedom, and threatens the integrity of biomedical research.” (Miller, 323). Everyone from the CDC to the medical school faculty has their work influenced by the pharmaceutical industry. Their influence comes in many shapes and forms such as grants, royalty payments, consulting agreements, and new lab equipment. Now if the scientist is working to disprove what the pharmaceutical company says is true about their product, the pharmaceutical companies will silence them or have their work discredited. If a scientist or doctor gets discredited, he/she will no longer be able to practice their livelihood again. So medical experts are skeptical about the idea of trying to prove the big pharma wrong. Out of fear of
