Overall Goal: Go through all questions quickly, answer the straightforward first, complex last. Reading Test 1. Prioritize the passages: from easiest to hardest by surveying the first and last paragraph. 1. The easiest will be the simplest to read and understand. 2. Strategy: SQ3R for when attempting each passage. 1. Step 1: Survey (NO Longer then 2 minutes) 1. Skim through the passage to identify the subject matter / point of view / overall purpose. 2. Survey the questions and mark the passage for that questions location (“in line 13...”). 2. Step 2: Question (In 30 seconds) 1. Think about what the passage is about, why it exist, and what it’s trying to answer. 3. Step 3: Read 1. Underline / Circle claims: to separate the “paragraphs points” from supporting details. 2. Underline / Circle Key, Contrast, and Continuation words: 1. Key words: revolve around claims. 2. Contrast Words: Signal a shift in argument 3. Continuation words: signals an emphasis. 2. Circle / label: author’s support (+) and rejection (-) of an argument. b. Step 4: Recite 1. Summarize in your own words after reading each paragraph.
