The State State is an international entity. Defined as a legally, independent entity that enjoys a permanent  population, a well-defined territory, and a government capable of  exercising sovereignty within that territory. - Number of States There are more than 190 “States” in the world (194 to be exact!!!). o There were 22 in 1800. o There were 55 in 1918. o There were 70 in 1945. o There were 160 in 1990. More countries may be created in the Middle-East  because of the ethnic divisions which create new  countries/”states.” - Defining characteristics… 1. Territory (Land) o Recognized limits amongst nations. 2. Population o Cannot be transient, must be permanent (No tourism). Antarctica is not a state. 3. Sovereign Government o The government has ultimate power (“You Da Boss”). o
