Civil Peace Essay In “Civil Peace,” Chinua Achebe’s philosophical assumption about what is truly important in a life without “Civil Peace,” is influenced by the story’s theme. In his writing, Achebe indicates how life lacked “Civil Peace,” after the Nigerian Civil War. The Nigerian Civil War, which lasted from 1967 to 1970, was the result of the Republic of Biafra isolating themselves from Nigeria and declaring independence. The war started in July 1967 when Biafra the rebellious southeastern region of Nigeria declared independence, but ended in 1970 with the defeat and reconciliation of Biafra. This declaration of independence caused hundreds of thousands of people to die of starvation at the hand of Nigerian government. In reaction to the Biafra’s choice, the Nigerian government cut of the food supply to Biafra. In “Civil Peace,” Achebe describes a valuable life lesson and the aftermath of the war by explaining the “Happy survival,” of his, “inestimable blessing” (327). This description depicts Achebe’s philosophical assumption about survival: in order to survive, we must be able to let go of what we have lost.
