Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators According to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), nursing quality indicators identify the structure, process and outcome in patient care to assure it is safe and effective (2007). The goal is to utilize best practice to improve upon nursing care and patient outcomes. The nursing-quality indicators or measurable data which could assist the nurses in this case by identifying issues that may interfere with patient care include structure, process and outcome. Structural indicators include staff ratio, current education or certifications and skill level. Process indicators are measured by assessing the patient and current process as well as job satisfaction. Outcome indicators reflect the patient outcomes which are directly dependent upon the quality of nursing care. With the Mr. J scenario, it is important to identify the desired outcome (pressure ulcer prevention and reducing restraint prevalence) as well as the current processes (e.g. skin assessment, frequency of turns and toileting, ) in order to develop recommendations. The nurse leader would start by assessing the current process by first collecting data regarding pressure ulcers acquired in the unit as well as use of restraints. Assessing the current practice and knowledge of staff in regard to pressure ulcers and restraints may lead to identification of the need for additional education or change in current policies and procedures.
