Matthew GreeneURI Big Band 11 March 2019MUS 106On March 1, 2019, I was lucky enough to attend the URI Big Band Concert.The concert was amix of blues and jazz and used music from artists that lived from 1887-2011.It started off with thedirector of the music department asking how many people from the audience were from the History ofJazz course.I would say over half was, and the other half of the audience was family and friends of theperformers.Because of this, I assumed that most of the audience would not be interested in the musicbeing played, but I was very wrong.Song after song the audience was clapping louder and louder.Everyone seemed to love it.The concert started off with a group called Free For All which featured 6people.There instruments were as follows: baritone saxophone, alto saxophone, vocalist, piano, bass, anddrums.This group caught my eye because of the vocalist, Fiona Greenough.Her voice seemed to fill theroom. Her pitch was perfectly in tune with the supporting instruments in the group.Also, something Ireally enjoyed is that it seemed like everyone in Free for All was able to have their chance to play a solo.After they preformed 4 songs, out came 3 members of the URI Big Band.The lighting on stage was dim,and you could not see much.They began to playDown by Riverside, which started quiet andprogressively got louder until the rest of the band came out. Seeing the URI Big Band up close and inaction was a phenomenal experience because the entire room seemed to erupt when the band was doneplaying. In the URI Big Band, the trumpet players and their solo performances were astonishing.The
