After World War II, Germany was defeated, its cities in ruins, its economy and infrastructure shattered. The first two or three years were very difficult. But after the founding of the Federal Republic, and thanks in part to the American economic help provided by the Marshall Plan, the West German economy began to grow rapidly. By the early 1950s, the economy was growing so rapidly that people began to speak of an "Economic Miracle." By the mid 1950s, the economy of the Federal Republic had grown so much, so fast that the country began experiencing a labor shortage. In 1955, West Germany began bringing "guest workers" ( Gastarbeiter ) from countries with weaker economies. The first came from Italy, then later from Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia, and Yugoslavia. In the beginning, the idea was that these people would work in Germany for a few years and then return home. Over time, though, many ended up staying in Germany long term.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
