Central idea : The excessive amount of straws are filling up our ocean and therefore we must stop the uses of straw to face this environmental problems. INTRODUCTION I. I would like to share a fact about straws. As you can see here in the poster. Straws are manufactured within 1 minute, used with an average of 10 minutes, decompose like the plastics which takes to up to 100 years and this effected the ecosystem because they thought that it’s their prey/food. A. Frightening isn’t it? We uses straw every day and every drink that we drink uses straws. And every drinks we use different straw. Means that every straws we use end up in the rubbish. B. About 500 million straws used including clear plastic straws, bendy straws, straws on juice boxes and plastic drink stirrers every day. C. That’s a lot of straw used in one day. One day! II. Seattle became the first major in U.S. city to ban plastic straws. a. Starbucks announced that they will abandon all plastic straws and replace them with common straw alternatives: cold cup strawless lids or, in the case of Frappuccino, biodegradable paper straws. Starbucks has vowed to get its iconic green sippers completely off store shelves by 2020. b. While Malaysia in an article stated Plastic straws will be banned in all the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan from Jan 1 next year.
III. I have done some research on this issue. Every restaurant mostly serve drinks with straw in it. A. If one restaurant serve 1000 drinks per day, imagine the amount of straws in 10 million restaurant can produce in a day. B. That will be 10 billion straws used in a day! If we keep using straws at this rate, the ocean will fill up plastic straws.
