Desire English 276 Prof. Ellis Hanson TOPICS FOR YOUR SECOND PAPER Remember that these are just topics, they are not theses. You have to come up with a thesis yourself. Be sure to state clearly what question you intend to ask of the text in the course of your essay. You do not have to answer all the questions in these topics. Write at least 5 pages (yes, that means all the way to the bottom of page 5) on one of the following topics. Your discussion section leader might have some additional topics in mind. You must write on a topic we have given you. SCRIPT AND PRODUCTION: Discuss a single speech (or a single exchange between two characters) from Marlowe’s play Edward II as it is interpreted in Derek Jarman’s cinematic adaptation. Consider the tone, word choice, poetic rhythms, literary and historical references, of Marlowe’s text, and explain what Jarman makes of them – or refuses to make of them. Why is this speech or this exchange particularly revealing about the character or the sexual themes and Jarman’s particular interpretation of them? Is the text even spoken by the same character in the same context in the film as in the play? How do the set, the costumes, the lighting, the music, and the casting contribute to your
