Assimilation and Pluralism Assimilation- A set of social processes that draws groups together Pluralism- A set of processes that maintain group differences, push groups apart Corporate pluralism- when people put stuff into laws to help one group. Competition and Stratification results in integration and then amalgamation = Assimilation Competition and stratification results in corporate pluralism and then political autonomy = equalitarian pluralism The middle path = inequalitarian pluralism. Leads to caste system and possibly expulsion or annihilation (holocaust) Affirmative Action Four kinds of programs: o Opportunity Enhancement. Ex: recruitment and training. Institutions making special efforts to make sure there are opportunities for all groups to receive opportunity chances. o Goals and Timetables. Government setup goals and timetables for businesses and governments to get more representation for underrepresented ethnic groups. o
