The New Germany: After Nazism and Communism The German Past Disunity and unification o Otto Von Bismarck brought together Germany after years of disunity- 1870 – WWII Authoritarianism o Franks subdue the Saxons in the east o Forced the people to become Christians o Empire became all Christian o Wars between protestant and catholics. 40% of German died. Changed political culture o Blood and iron = method of getting unity o Nazis 1949 First time of democracy in Germany Federal Republic of Germany created out of the three western zones the allies occupied o Used the parliamentary form of government. Used the American federal system as the relationship between local and national government o Temporary constitution used until reunification German Democratic Republic created out of the eastern zone the Soviets occupied o Started to implement socialist methods Two Peoples- One Nation? Wir sind das Volk! = We are the people! Wir sind ein Volk! = We are one people! o Eastern Germans wanted to become part of Germany as a whole again There’s still a “wall in the mind” How do you get both east and west to come together? Germany has become too democratic for its own culture- ex: foreigners The Problem of Identity Cultural Patriotic? Some question about this.
