Turner, O. Page 3Book Summary: Flowers For Algernon The book begins with progress report one, written by Charlie. This provides the exposition or part that explains the main character and theme of the story. The main character Charlie Gordon, is a mentally retarded 32 year old man. He has been chosen by his teacher at theadult retarded class, Professor Nemur, a scientist, and Doctor Strauss, a neurologist and psychiatrist, to undergo and experimental surgery to increase his low IQ. As Charlie begins the test they asked him to write daily progress reports. The rising action begins with Charlie unsuccessfully, trying to beat Algernon in a maze race. Algernon is a white mouse that Professor Nemur and Doctor Strauss experimented on before Charlie. After the surgery Charlie beats Algernon and decides he wants to be his friend. This is the point of rising climax. You want to see if the surgery is successful and you begin to realize that Charlie is changing. Charlie’s nurse tells him that what they have done is morally wrong. God made him the way he is so, she is dismissed as Charlie’s nurse. Charlie starts his education with Miss Alice Kinnian, which moves rapidly and he eventually passes her intellectually. Emotionally Charlie has a hard time. He begins to have bad dreams about his childhood. He now understands what has happened to him. He realizes that his so called friends
