Page i Introduction Introduction Introduction The Network File System (NFS) protocol is in use widely in many Unix and TCP/IP environments. PC's running NFS client software can access file systems in NFS servers across LANs and WANs. When a remote file system is mounted on a PC drive letter, it can be accessed as if it is a local fixed disk drive by nearly all application software. Along with this software, you can setup an NFS file server on a Unix machine, one of the many freeware Unix-like OSes, or a host of other operating systems or dedicated NFS servers, and you have all you need to share files with many PCs at once. You can also redirect printer output to printers and print queues on your file server(s). Several commercial (PC)NFS packages are available; this NFS driver for MS-DOS v3.1+ is an inexpensive, supported shareware alternative. Versions of this software are available with builtin TCP/UDP/IP (WatTCP), and which use several different shareware and commercial resident TCP/IP protocol stacks for the network transport including: Trumpet ABI stacks (such as Trumpet's NTPCDRV), Novell LAN Workplace, and the Microsoft LanMan TCP/IP /HP / 3Com and compatible stacks. Future versions are planned for additional stacks. In addition to this software, you will first need to install a compatible protocol stack or install a "PKTDRVR" and configure WatTCP. If you're using one of the external protocol stack versions of the client, applications like telnet and ftp are probably available or included with your stack. For the WatTCP version, WatTCP applications as well as other pktdrvr applications may be used through the built- in pktdrvr packet multiplexor. Both PKTDRVRs and an alternative external PKTMUX are described below. Minor differences between the different protocol-stack versions of the NFS client are mentioned in the appropriate sections of this document, while some notes and consideration for using each stack are included in appendices. Important Tip: If you are looking to get the best possible speed out of this NFS client with the tradeoff of increased memory usage, be sure to review and apply the rsize/wsize options and the manual section on Performance Tuning; our defaults have been chosen conservatively to provide the least problems in varied environments. We think you'll find this to be one of the fastest DOS NFS clients available.
