Hank Greene Question Set 9 1. the bacterial growth curve represents the exponential reproduction of bacteria in a favorable environment. Bacteria in a favorable environment can replicate every 20 minutes, so the bacteria population doubles every 20 minutes. Viral reproduction happens in cycles though. Each period of rapid growth shown on the graph represents the simultaneous endings of several lytic cycles, where the host cell lyses and many new viral phages are released. The flat portions of the graph represent the periods where no phages are produced because protein synthesis inside of the host cell is still constructing the phages. 2. a. Proximately, mutations are deleterious because they can alter the bacterial genes. Possibly causing the bacteria to mutate, leading to a favorable contribution to the bacteria’s genes, and making it more deadly to its host. Ultimately, it has been shown that mutated strains of bacterial DNA have produced a strain of bacteria that can grow in “minimal medium” containing only glucose and salts, this type of bacteria is
