Introduction
The concept on why people are attracted to each other has received several reactions and
justifications. Several studies have been conducted in an attempt to answer this question.
Attraction is a common thing in our day to day lives and it seems relatively easy to explain
where it emanates from. However, the concept of attraction is a complex one and is not as simple
as people view it. The notion is complex in nature in that it is attributed to by several factors and
reasons. In an attempt to understand this, the psychology of attraction is a subject of interest
today. Social psychologists who study human behaviour have come up with some explanations
on the same. People are attracted to each other due to a number of reasons, such as proximity,
exposure, similarity, physical attraction, need for someone to complement us, touch, time, trust,
as well as status.
Review of Literature and Justification
Firstly, people are attracted to each other due to proximity. Often, people get attracted to
others who are near them. This is because closeness enhances familiarity and closeness. These
two factors on the other hand encourages freeness. In most cases, individuals prefer spending
time with those who they feel free with (Christakis & Fowler, 2014). This has been known as one
of the strong forces that triggers attraction. It becomes easy to interact with people who are close
to us in terms of distance as opposed to those who are far away. For instance, when one joins a
learning institution, at first, the individual feels uncomfortable due to the fact that they are not
familiar with the rest. With time, the new student interacts with fellow classmates and roommates

and some comfort is gained. The end result of this is closeness and attraction. As such it is
therefore evident that proximity is one of the reasons as to why people are attracted to each other.
Secondly, exposure to specific stimulus repeatedly is enough to generate an attraction.
Stimulus in this case refers to a person of interest or one who is pleasing you in some ways. The
person of interest evokes a positive feelings which then bring about the concept of familiarity. As
mentioned previously, familiarity triggers attraction. It is difficult to get attracted to people who
you are not familiar with. Exposure plays a key role in bridging out that gap by letting
individuals learn more about each other (Peskin & Newell, 2004). For instance when two people
meet, the chances of getting attracted to each other heavily depends on the time they spend
together. If the two have a good time together and carry out fun activities, they are likely to get
attracted to each other and in most cases advance their attraction into love. Following these
