A prokaryotic species is a population of cells that share certain rRNA sequences; in conventional biochemical testing, it is a population of cells with similar characteristics. They are different from that of the eukaryotic species because they do not perform cell division by sexual conjugation; therefore, reproduction is not always species specific. Eukaryotic species, however, are grouped together based on ability of exchanging genes and breeding. 2. How do fungal colonies differ from bacterial colonies? (What are the basic differences between fungi and bacteria?) Bacterial colonies are small, smooth, or rough with defined margins while fungal colonies are large colonies with a fuzzy appearance.
