AbstractBig Data is apparently a new “thing” that enhances a company’s capabilities to become market leaders, by using “big data” as an asset. Oracle defines Big Data as a “larger, more complex data sets, especially from new data sources. These data sets are so voluminous that traditional data processing software just can’t manage them. But these massive volumes of data can be used to address business problems you wouldn’t have been able to tackle before.”(Oracle 2019) Data is embedded in every aspect of a business and with proper analysis can allow for your business to make more efficient choices to be able to outsmart the competition, improve productivity and increase the quality of goods and services. Big Data is the core of competing on a global platform. “Big Data can show management areas for improvement and help employees be more aware of their work habits and activities. Rather than a one-time investment in some kind of training or seminar, this kind of data can be an ongoing resource; one that continually reveals new pathways to improvement as more and better data is collected. Fortune 500 companies are investing tens of billions of dollars in Big Data initiatives for a simple reason: to save money and gain market share by accurately predicting future behavior rather than guessing at it. Rapidly advancing analytics-based solutions have changed how forward-thinking employers manage their workforces to help them become more productive and profitable.” (Crossover 2018) The V’s of Big Data“The amount of data matters. With big data, you’ll have to process high volumes of low-density, unstructured data. This can be data of unknown value, such as Twitter data feeds, clickstreams on a webpage or a mobile app, or sensor-enabled equipment. For some organizations, this might be tens of terabytes of data. For others, it may be hundreds of petabytes.
