Q week 1
"Compensation Systems Fit with Business Strategies"
Please respond to the following:
Discuss the relationship between the strategic decisions and compensation practices of
your current or former organization (Alternately, you may conduct online research to select an
organization of your choice). Next, identify at least two (2) advantages and disadvantages
associated with the compensation practices.
During my time as a county corrections officer the facilities strategic decisions were
made and are still made by a board of directors. These decisions are made in accordance with all
New Jersey law enforcement guidelines, policies and protocols. In my opinion the strategic
decisions and the compensation practices favored each other but could sometimes be unbalanced
with the compensation being on the lesser side. As a County Correction Officer, I made $29,400
to start and received a raise on Jan 1., each year. By the time I was into my first year, I had
already received 2 raises (my annual and one for completing basic training). I also received full
coverage on medical benefits with a low copay. We also got to enjoy holiday parties and, covered
sick time, Paid time off and the availability to use time that had not been earned.
The compensation sounds great, but this was an extremely dangerous job, that at times
seemed unfavorable due to the working conditions. There were several areas of the facility that
contained black mold, the ceilings caved in, and there were several outbreaks of mersa. There
were many complaints sent about the condition of the building and the administration did not
respond in a timely manner, as a result several inmates and one officer contacted mersa.
Although the compensation was not based on seniority, your ranking and where you worked was.
If you ranked the highest in the training class (test scores) you had the choice of a wider list of
units, but at any given time a senior officer could bump you from your unit.
The advantage of this compensation package not only came in the form of money, but
also with training (hand to hand combat and weapons training). The training received is a
modified version of NJ law enforcement officers receive and helps officers become
mentally and physically prepared to handle their daily duties. The county also provided
on the job training and paired new recruits with senior instructors during the first 90 days.
One of the disadvantages to the compensation package that officers faced were the
attitudes of the administration. Many in our area called us “high priced babysitters”. The
administration as well as others didn’t really understand the dangers of our position. Our
facility is classified as a minimum/medium level facility, but due to overcrowding and
backflow from other facilities we have a mix of different classifications of inmates. At
one point the jail was so overcrowded with inmates from the state facilities that we had to
house inmates on the gym floor on cots, but why should the officers complain when they
make so much money?
