Andrew SmithPOLS 1300 Midterm Exam1. Political equality means that everybody is equal in status and has the same political value as everybody else. Political liberties are the basic freedoms that allow the majority to express themselves about how they feel on certain issues without being punished. Popular sovereignty means that the people of a democracy should be the ultimate authority and the government should do what the people want. The original Constitution met the first benchmark because all white male landowners had equal representation, but it missed the benchmark in equal treatment and voting equality because African Americans, women, and white males who did not own land. The Constitution did not meet the second benchmark of political liberty until the Bill of Rights was added onto it later. When the Bill of rights was added, it met the benchmark perfectly. Lastly, the Constitution met the third benchmark, popular sovereignty, because it paid attention
