Hobbes refers to the government as a “levithian” because he compares it to a large mythological sea creature who was known and described as the “King over all children of pride.” Hobbes took this and interpreted it as the government is the king over prideful people, and that it is our pride that forces us to create a government. Furthermore, Hobbes further argues that when we are in the primal state of nature, everyone gains knowledge through experience, and given enough time and effort we can all rise to a comparable intellectual level. (Feiser 95) 3. What are the three causes of quarrel in the state of nature? What examples does Hobbes give to prove his gloomy description of human nature? a. Three causes of quarrel are that we equally desire things that are in limited supply.
