Instructions: 1. Develop a minimum of five communication norms that define what healthy, effective communication may look like in your relationships. a. Norms are common understandings between/among people about how each should behave in certain situation. i. Remember, a goal of communication is for each person’s wants/needs to be met enough and for both people to walk away from an interaction feeling good too. 2. Identify BEHAVIORS that are appropriate and inappropriate considering the topics we discussed: Emotional defenses Managing intense, negative emotions (Coping) Effects of sex and personality on our style of communication Nonverbal Communication & Effects of technology Style of Conflict Resolving conflict with Communication Leads; Focusing on underlying feelings and needs vs. facts Languages of Apology 3. Your communication norms should have an active voice. a. For example, type “We will focus on the current issue(s)” instead of “Don’t bring up the past”.
