Unformatted text preview: The Factors of a Sustainable Community By: Ciara Goins Biodiversity Biodiversity is when there is a rich diversified ecosystem with many different species. The more diverse, the more complex a food web. A complex food web in very stable, because if one animal were to die off or reduce in size, t here would be alternatives. There are more options for food throughout the ecosystem. The more biodiversity present, the more widespread gene pool. Therefore there are greater chances for adaptations for survival being inherited by the next generation. The more diverse of an ecosystem, the more sustainable it may be. Some ways that will allow us to increase biodiversity is to preserve underdeveloped land and to restore and reclaim developed land. This will allow more room for habitat growth. We also need to minimize the pollution that we release throughout our everyday life. Energy Use Currently, the world relies very heavily on nonrenewable resources for energy. This practice is not at all sustainable because we will eventually reach a state of peak oil. From reaching peak oil, we will steadily decline in usage over time. These non renewable resources are not a sustainable source and will run out over time. In order to have a more sustainable energy source, we need to start integrating renewable resources into our energy system. If we look to sources such as wind, water, and solar instead of petroleum we may live in a much more sustainable environment ten years from now. Food Supply Currently our food supply is not sustainable. The Green Revolution may have brought strains of higher yielding crops, but it also brought an increase in pesticide use, less diversity among crops, and increased resistance of species to pesticides. These practices are not at all good for our environment. In order to increase sustainability within our food supply we need to try and eat locally and organically. Locally cuts down transportation pollution, and organically cuts down on pesticide usage. Population and Pollution Population may have grown dramatically over the years; however, alone it is not so alarming. Pollution of any form isn’t great. But the less people the less pollution, and that doesn’t seem all that worrisome. But the issue is when you put a exponentially growing population with a disregard of how we are polluting the earth, that is a major concern. Increasing population leads to an increase in consumption which could make vital resources a scarcity. This scarcity can lead to a degradation of the resources, loss of biodiversity, increased pollution, and climate change. All of these effects are highly unsustainable in the long run. In order to combat this, we can reduce our pollution by recycling and using reusable products. We need to limit our pollution at every turn in order to maintain a sustainable community.
