Her sacrifice was a selfish one she throws away a life with her husband and son for the death. She calls death her “new lover” and she throws herself fully into his arms. She does this purely for herself and herself alone. What she did is a representation of the book itself because it is a choice that just about everyone has and just like how the man and the boy paint their world in black and white, good or bad this is a black and white thing as well, you chose to live or you chose to die. This choice is painted as bad but is also a thing the man grapples withIn the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy sacrifice is a topic throughout the book. One character that sacrifices something in the novel is the mother. The mother is not spoken about until closer to the middle of the book. Until this time, we don’t know what happened to the mother other than the fact that she died, but at this point we learn that she in fact killed herself. This sacrifice defines who the woman is, this sacrifice unlike the ones made later in the book by other characters is selfish, andis labeled as wrong not only in our western way of thinking but also ultimately by the father as well.
