Client comment 1: "I have no idea what to do, and I hope you can tell me." Therapist: “It sounds like you are feeling lost in your present situation but you don’t think you know what to do, and you were hoping I could give you the answer. If I could share something with you, I wish I had all the answers for you. Unfortunately, I don’t. What I can do is to help you find the answers that are already hidden within yourself. Would you like to work on that?” Feelings of helplessness and powerlessness result in the inability to make decisions which often lead a client to counseling. Motivational Interviewing is a tool that is directive within the client’s specific situation. It uses reflective listening, empathy, guided ambivalence, summarization, and using client’s change talk to steer them toward the answers they already have, but don’t realize it (Cengage Learning Australia, 2017). Client comment 2: "My mother thinks I'm making the wrong decision and that makes me so angry. She is always trying to control me." Therapist: “Wow, it sounds like this is a pretty big deal for you, I can hear how upset it makes you.”
