October 31, 2007 The Greeks Nike- God of victory Athenians identified Nike with Athena Greek theatre were more a form of landscaping than a building Three ppl at a time on stage When the chorus leaves that is when the play was over Temple of Dionysus always remained close to the Greek Theatres Orchestra- is Greek for “place for dancing” Theatron- place where the audience sits Parodos- side entrance (singular) or parodoi (plural) Skène- Greek word for tent it was a building were costumes and props were kept Lower case letters invented (?) October 31, 2007 Recitation Aristotle says that all early philosophers are looking for the beginning “ arche” Ways in which philosophers tried to explain why their beliefs were correct, they introduce “nous ” this is what gives order and produces distinctions in nature and in the mind. Axenamnder says that without “nous” there is no order “Ethos” ones good character A&L Readings - City Dionysian was a festival held in the spring in Athens
