October 29, 2007 The Greeks Sophist- some one with a reputation for being smart in general, some one who made a profession of being skilled, jack of all trades, what characterize the sophist is their completion of their masters in finding out how the world worked and the laws that govern it. They were interested in the laws that govern history, our physical bodies, and emotions. 1. Knowledge- the sophist were reacting in part to their environment, who to believe, “The measure of all things that exists and things that don’t exist is the human being” –Protagoras, ppl have a right to their own opinion. 2. Ethics- what is just and unjust, “Physis”- nature, “Namoi”- law, colony of Thurii in south Italy was a rare example of a colony of Athens in the 5 th century, Antiphon (Athenian) believed that nature will win out over law. 3. Psychology- what determines human behavior, 4. Religion- are there gods, what do they look like, they sophist believed that all the different interpretations of the gods physical features were wrong.
