MENTAL MODELS A mental model is the model people have of themselves, others, the environment, and the things with which they interact. People form mental models through: experience, training and instruction. Question: thermostat, US vs. UK driving, etc. There are two types of mental models that users employ when interacting with devices/systems: structural and functional mental models. i) Structural mental models These are used to describe the internal mechanics of a device/system in terms of its component parts. Structural mental models may be most useful when a device breaks down and it is necessary to work out how to mend it. Structural mental models are context-free. Examples of structural mental models: - A schematic map of a train line. Note that the structural mental model is not useful regarding how to use the train e.g. type of ticket, how to validate ticket, etc; and thus the need for a functional mental model.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
