Question 6 1. What is an abrasive wheel ring test? When must a ring test be conducted? Include the citation for the OSHA standard where you found the answer to the question. The ring test is an inspection performed before each install of grinding wheels. You tap the wheels about 45 degrees from vertical centerline and listen for a metallic ring if the wheel has a dull thud sound it means it is no good. Repeat this test around the circumference of the wheel listening for the clear metallic ring sound. The wheel should also be dry when performing this test. A cracked wheel can explode during use and injure the operator. 1910.215(d)(1) Inspection. Immediately before mounting, all wheels shall be closely inspected and sounded by the user (ring test) to make sure they have not been damaged in transit, storage, or otherwise. The spindle speed of the machine shall be checked before mounting of the wheel to be certain that it does not exceed the maximum operating speed marked on the wheel. Wheels should be tapped gently with a light nonmetallic implement, such as the handle of a screwdriver for light wheels, or a wooden mallet for heavier wheels. If they sound cracked (dead), they shall not be used. This is known as the "Ring Test".
