Mike Shay EN 11 Professor Rose 11/22/15 The Social Media War Technology has advanced to the point where anyone with access to the internet can share any amount of information with anyone in the world. Most people use this power to share videos or stories with their friends and family to keep them updated on their lives. Others, like the terror group ISIS, use social media to make threats and instill fear in the lives of their enemies. In 2014, the Islamic State group began beheading a number of its captives, who were held as pris- oners for disbelieving in their cause. Locals were executed to deter people, including ISIS sol- diers, from disobeying the state. Their motivations grew, however, once the Western World started getting involved in their affairs. United States aid workers and journalists were captured for trying to help the innocent lo- cals who had been suffering from the reign of terror in countries like Iraq and Syria. As retalia- tion, the US dropped bombs on multiple ISIS bases in June of 2014, marking the start of Ameri- can intervention in Iraq. Days after the airstrikes, the family of American journalist/hostage James Foley received an email from ISIS members who claimed that their American hostages would be executed as a result of American intervention. Months later, that same family received the news that their son had been beheaded by the Islamic State group. Furthermore, a gruesome video was leaked by the terror group, which opens with a clip of President Obama’s speech that authorized airstrikes in Iraq. Next, Foley is shown kneeling next to his executioner, reading a script written for him by the Islamic State group. Foley is not only forced to admit that his fate
was decided by Obama’s actions, he is forced to blame his own brother, a member of the US Air Force, for following through with orders to bomb ISIS, subsequently causing the journalist’s death. The video fades to black as the beheading occurs, but then fades back to show Foley’s de- capitated head laying on top of his body. The video ends with a clip of Steven Sotloff, another
