1/24/19 Lab 1 Purpose: The purpose of the lab is to observe microorganisms by using a microscope, set up a wet mount, isolate the microbiome and plate it on TSA plates, and prepare a simple stain by making a bacterial smear first. Results: All 10x Questions: 1. What is the process that is part of aseptic technique that kills all organisms called? Penicillin (E) Blue-green algae (E) E. Coli (B) Staphylococcus aureus (B) Bacillus subtilis (B) Paramecium
Errors: No errors.
2/7/19 Lab 2 Purpose: The purpose of the lab is to analyze the plates from the last lab, select a colony, and stain some bacteria. Results: My colony has a circular shape and it was raised. The colony was a pale yellow, and it had a ring on the outside that was a lighter shade than the middle of the circle. The colony was small in size. I only had one colony. Staphylococcus aureus (10x) Bacillus subtilis (10x) Questions: 1. What is the most common organism on your skin? Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common organism on your skin. 2. When looking at a colony on a plate, what are 2 characteristics of the colony that may help you in identifying what species of bacteria you might have? 2 characteristics that would help in identifying species of bacteria would be the size and shape of the colony. 3. What color are the bacteria after the crystal violet staining? The bacteria after the crystal violet staining are purple/violet. 4. What is a common error when preparing a bacterial smear? A common error when preparing a bacterial smear would be having too much bacteria. Errors: No errors.
2/14/19 Lab 3 Purpose: The purpose of the lab is to analyze pure culture/streak plate, simple stain, and Gram stain introduction. Results: Elbow streak plate- This plate was successful at isolating individual colonies. The colonies were circular, raised, large, and pale yellow in color. Staphylococcus aureus plate- This plate was successful at isolating individual colonies as well.
