Psyc 240: Chapter 8 – Dr. Murray McNiel (psychologist at VA hospital) Evolutionary Perspectives on Personality Like fatty foods b/c in past were rare Why we are the way we are = evolutionary psyc All humans today come from an unbroken line of ancestors who accomplished 2 tasks: they survived to reproductive age, and they reproduced o From evolution’s standpoint, the former is only important to the extent it is associated w/ the latter We carry adaptive mechanisms that led to our ancestors’ success Darwin’s Insight: Natural Selection Before Darwin, 2 features of evolution were recognized: Change over time and apparent adaptation to environment o Observation Darwin came up w/ a theoretical model to explain these phenomena (theory; reason) NOTE: Science = observation (empiricism) + rationalism Sexual Selection Darwin noticed that many mechanisms seemed to threaten survival He proposed evolution by sexual selection as solution—these traits evolved b/c they contributed to an individual’s mating success 2 forms of sexual selection: o Intrasexual competition – members of the same sex compete w/ each other for sexual access to members of the other sex (making self attractive to the opposite sex)
