Sociology 3351 - Question 1 There are many government policies that benefit various social classes. One of them is the public-school policy which favor the middle class. Starting in the 19 th century, the middle class had the opportunity to attend school despite of their economic situation. Having the opportunity to go to school also means that people are able to acquire new skills and gain knowledge which then makes them a better candidate. These people now are able to qualify for improved jobs and can climb the social hierarchy if they are successful in their jobs. Following that policy was the Morrill Act of 1854 which provided the establishment of colleges and universities. This policy offered a higher education to kids who came from the middle class. Having a higher education is important especially today. If one has a degree, they are able to compete with other applicants. Another example is the G.I Bill which rewarded veterans. After the second world war the government introduced this bill to veterans, so they can have better opportunities once they returned home. For instance, they were given the chance to attend a college while the government was paying tuition and books. Millions of people took advantage of this opportunity because having a higher education meant having a well-paying job. As a result, the middle class was expanding rapidly. This bill also made it possible for families to afford a new home causing them to move into the suburbs. This was beneficial because they did not have to pay income tax on this bill.

There were also programs that benefited the poor. President Johnson introduced the Great Society in 1964 which aimed towards the elimination of poverty. One of the programs that was strengthen was the Social Security which especially benefited the elderly middle class. The Medicare system was also improved which caused the poverty among the elderly to drop significantly. Medicaid also benefited the poor by providing free or affordable health care. This also helped the poverty rate to decrease. Just like there is welfare for the poor, the rich also have their form of welfare, specifically the big corporations. One example is the Corporate Foreign Tax Credit is a tax break provided by the government to decrease the tax liability of certain taxpayers. This gives the corporations a room for loopholes which they take advantage of. These companies move their business offshore to avoid paying taxes on their profits which saves them billions. Another example is the 1872 Mining Act which is a federal law that gives permission to companies to mine on federal land charging them only $5 an acre. This means that industries are able to mine and cut trees on federal land, which belongs to the public, while making a profit. These products are then sold at the public’s expense.
