Watson 1 Parker Watson Mark Katz MUSC 143 001 12 November 2007 The Avett Brothers Concert On Friday, the 26th of October, the Avett Brothers performed at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, North Carolina as part of North Carolina State University’s homecoming celebration. The Avett Brothers were preceded by Brett Dennen, a musician hailing from Oakdale, California, and followed by Guster, a four-man ensemble hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. Brett Dennen’s music can be described as a mixture of pop, folk rock, and indie music. It incorporates a lot of influences from music from the 1960s. Dennen’s music takes the audience back to an Eastern-dominated, hippie music culture. However, Dennen’s music seemed to be high volume, low sound. Guster, the band that concluded the concert, showcased their sound by incorporating the heavy use of a synthesizer to create a sound that is reminiscent of 1970s television theme songs. One song even sounds eerily similar to the early, famous Batman theme song. Though the Avett Brothers were not supposed to be the headlining band, they were the only band to have an encore encouraged by the audience and were obviously the main focus of the concert. The Avett Brothers, consisting of brothers Scott and Seth Avett and friend Bob Crawford, creates a folk rock sound with strong, conspicuous country and bluegrass influences.
