Clifford Geertz, goes into depth about Balinese cockfighting in his article, “Deep Play: notes on the Balinese cockfight”.Not only does Geertz talk about cockfighting, he also explains the real meaning behind it and why it’s so important to the Balinese people. Geertz states that a large cockfight was held in the public square in order to raise money for a new school. Under the Republic in Bali,cockfighting is illegal so the villagers had to keep a low profile. The cops soon found about the affair and ceased it, which led to Geertz and all the villagers fleeing the public square. The police soon located Geertz, who was with his wife and this other Balinese couple. The police rapidly questioned them about their whereabouts and instead of showing the police their US citizenship papers, Geertz told the officer that they weren’t atthe fight; this encounter turned out to have a positive impact on Geertz and his wife because the villagers finally acknowledged them.
