In 1997, Americans spent 5 billion dollars on herbal medicines, about $14 per person. Herbal medicine is nothing new. Human cultures have utilized plants to treat and even cure various ailments since the beginning of time. Herbal medicine is nothing new. A Neanderthal was found buried with eight different plant species, all of which are known to have medicinal properties. Herbal medicine is nothing new. Human cultures have utilized plants to treat and even cure various ailments since the beginning of time. The word drug itself comes from the Swedish word "druug" or droog, which refers to 'dried plants'. Medicinal plants were found in the personal effects of an "Ice man," frozen in the Swiss Alps for more than 5,000 years. Among his possessions were two species of polypore fungi. One of these, the birch fungus, is known to have antibacterial properties, and was likely used for medicinal purposes. Plants produce numerous bioactive compounds so-called phytochemicals. These are thought to have evolved in order to protect the plants from microorganisms, insects and larger herbivores. It is these compounds that are active in herbal medicines, as some of the have significant effects on human physiology or on the physiology of infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses).
