Homework Assignment 6 Discussion Board After you’ve completed question #2, answer the following questions and post your answers on the discussion board. Also respond to two of your peers. The social work profession emphasizes enhancing the wellbeing of those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. When designing a research study, such as the study in this homework assignment, 1.What social justice elements would you consider? 2.Do you think it would be important to consider income? Why or why not? 3.What are some cultural elements to consider? 4.How could you respect the privacy of your research participants? 5.How could you maximize benefits and minimize risks for your participants? 1. In designing an research study, a social work researcher would need to be aware of the social justice issues such as having respect for the cultures and beliefs of others, and current social change movements. The researcher needs to be sufficiently aware about the culture and beliefs of those participating in the study so they could design a research study that will not put participants in the position of possibly compromising elements of their culture or beliefs and/or would not be construed as offensive to them. Research designs and procedures would also have to be produced in a way as to be non-discriminatory and culturally sensitive to certain populations in the past that have been marginalized. For example, you would want to examine your study with a critical eye so as to eliminate anything that could be considered sexist, racist, homophobic, or intolerant to a certain religion and to ensure that the study is respectful of diversity. In designing research, you would also want to be aware of the extent that your research could be used to create and/or inform social change. 2. It is important to consider income. As Maslow's hierarchy of need proposes, those that are living in poverty are often preoccupied with how they will survive from one day to the next, and that can effect their level of functioning and their ability to be concerned with needs beyond the basics (food, shelter, clothing) and to seek treatment for their own well-being. Those that have lower incomes may also have issues with being able to access treatments that would

be most appropriate and effective for them. In addition, those with lower income may also not see it as a priority to seek out ways to improve their emotional well-being. 3. Cultural elements that effect social work research are wide a varied. Social work researchers have to develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills that can help them relate to the population they want to study. A researcher must be aware of the historical experiences of the culture and how those experiences influence the way that those cultures currently experience society view members of the dominant culture. In order to effectively study a
