CAS 201—Options for Paper #2 (FA 06) Paper #2 (5-7 pages) : Select one of the following. A. Using terms and concepts drawn from the Classical Canons of rhetoric, describe and evaluate comparatively two speakers. You should select two “orations” that will permit you to observe and describe each in terms of its deployment of inventional resources (modes of persuasion used, lines of argument pursued, points of stasis exploited, etc.), structural characteristics (how it is organized), language style (word choice, metaphors/similes/analogies, rhythm, alliteration, etc.), preparation (speaker appeared to be in command of material, fluent, confident, etc.), and delivery (including both vocal and physical qualities). The speeches you study may be from actual performances you attend or from speeches on film and video, and they may be either real or fictional (e.g. Nixon’s “Checkers” speech, King’s “I Have a Dream,” a Reagan speech, an actor giving Marc Antony’s speech in a film of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” one giving
