Beam A Tributary Load = 265 lb/ft 2 x 800 ft 2 = 212,000 lb Beam A w = 212,000 lb/40 ft = 5300 lb/ft (this is NOT a necessary step) M = w L 2 /8 = (5300 lb/ft x (40ft)2/8 = 1,060,000 ft-lb … at this point, you can use the table OR calculate the value … we will use the table since this is the exercise we are doing … Max Moment for a W36x160 = 1,070,000 ft-lb > 1,060,000 ft-lb … OK Beam B Tributary Load = 265 lb/ft 2 x 1600 ft 2 = 424,000 lb Beam B w = 424,000 lb/40 ft = 10,600 lb/ft M = w L 2 /8 = 10,600 lb/ft x (40ft) 2 /8 = 2,120,000 ft-lb Max Moment for a W40x268 = 2,160,000 ft-lb > 2,120,000 ft-lb . .. OK Note … a W24x408 will work … but it costs about $200/ft more. Not a good value for your client to save 16in. Note … these are pretty heavy loads.
