2CASE STUDY ON ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENTIntroductionTalia is a 17-year-old biracial female who is a senior in high school and struggling withher identity development.Talia’s father has had limited contact with her since the separation ofher parent’s when she was 4 years old.Being of mixed cultures, Caucasian and Asian she ismissing the cultural education of her Asian background from her father.Right now, she isstruggling with her self-esteem and not sure of her future goals as she has multiple directions,she would like to take her education in.Currently Talia is enrolled in a cosmetology programthrough her high school she has been attending for the past two years, but she also has interest ineducation and culinary arts.Using Marcia’s theory of identity development, I will assess Talia’scurrent struggle with her future plans, also exploring the culture and cultural identity on hersituation, then, lastly, suggesting interventions in assisting her to resolve her current conflicts andimproving her self-esteem.Marcia’s Identity DevelopmentJames Marcia, psychologist used Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development andexpanded it into a complex of identity which can be labeled under two characteristics.Thecharacteristics of crisis or commitment.Defined, the characteristic of crisis is when anadolescent is consciously choosing between various alternatives and makes a decision.Commitment is the investment in a course of action or ideology (Feldman, 2013).Marcia furtherbreaks down that adolescents have four categories when working with identity.The first,Identity Achievement.Adolescents in this category have successfully explored and thoughtabout who they are and what they want to do.This category comes after a period of crisis andhave made the commitment to their identity.The next category is Identity Foreclosure.
