Over the course of religious history in South Africa, as missionaries spread their faith, as powerful individuals used Christianity to both torture and set free the people of South Africa, leaders have displayed traits of both the task and relationship leadership styles. GROUP ESSAY 2 styles to further their causes. Faith communities stand as groups of people who share a similar set of beliefs regarding the existence of a higher power and the certain practices and beliefs they choose to follow. These kinds of communities have existed all over the world since almost the beginning of human life. South African faith communities have undergone an abundance of change in more recent history due mainly to the arrival of the Christian missionaries. Today, the major religions recognized in South Africa include Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, traditional African religions and Judaism. Christianity has the most prevalence today with about eighty-five percent of South Africans practicing it. Tribal religion held prominence over South African faith communities in the earlier history of South Africa. Tribal Religion valued community above all else. Separation from this community seemed to its members as a sentence even worse than death. The followers of tribal religion emphasized the importance of ancestral spirits and their ruling over the world and its people. Followers would often make offerings to these spirits in order to appease them and bring good will into their lives. Believers of tribal religions thought that the leaders of the community in which they lived held powers of healing and counseling granted upon them by ancestral spirits to aid the community in these ways (African traditional religion, 2018). Christianity arrived in South Africa in the year 1652 with the arrival of the Dutch East India Company. At first, their purpose consisted only of setting up a refreshment station at Cape town. However, soon they saw the opportunity to bring their Christian beliefs unto the natives of South Africa (Christianity in South Africa). Christianity continued to grow throughout South Africa and ultimately remained responsible for the birth of Apartheid.
