This learning module is one of five modules that make up the Certificate IV in Financial Services— General Insurance. The other four are: • FSI401 Serving the Customer • FSI402 Insurance Law and Regulation (Australia) OR FSI406 New Zealand Insurance Law and Regulation • FSI403 Insurance Products • FSI405 Claims Handling. When you successfully complete this course, you will be eligible for the nationally recognised AQF qualification: Certificate IV in Financial Services—General Insurance. Section 1 Underwriting principles This section will investigate the fundamentals that underpin every aspect of the underwriting process. It will discuss the concept of risk and explain how risks are assessed, then look at the principles of underwriting and explain the underwriter’s role in the underwriting process. It will examine in detail the five main underwriting functions of selecting the risk, determining the policy terms and conditions, determining the classification and rate, entering the data, deciding how much risk is to be retained by the insurer and the amount of reinsurance necessary. A definition of reinsurance will be provided and the section will investigate the key types of reinsurance available to insurers. Section 2 Evaluating and selecting risks This section explains the kind of information needed to evaluate and select risks and where to find it. It will look at sources of risk information and the types of hazards that must be assessed prior to accepting the risk. It will also discuss the types of hazards insurers prefer (above standard risks) and the type they may accommodate (below standard risks). Finally, the section will look at how information can be sourced from the insured. Section 3 Proposal forms This section examines the format and content of proposal forms and looks at how they are designed to help the insured provide the necessary information. You can also plan your study time to fit in with other commitments like work or family. However, there are also challenges. Learning requires discipline and motivation. The following table provides tips to help you make the most of the time you have available to study: Study tip Find a suitable place to study… Most people need order and quiet to study effectively, so try to find a suitable place to do your work—preferably somewhere you can leave your study materials out until next time. Organise yourself… Have your study materials organised in one place and keep your notes clearly labelled and sorted. Work through the topics in your learning module systematically. Seek help for difficulties straight away. Never leave this until later. Plan… Make a study schedule and stick to it. Set specific times each week for study and keep them free of other activities. Make a note of the due date for the assignment and plan for extra study time in the lead-up to this date. Manage your time… Set aside a reasonable amount of time each week for study—but don’t be too ambitious or you won’t be able to keep up the pace. Work in productive blocks of time with regular rests.
