QUESTION 1 1. Write an essay consisting of at least 500 words addressing ALL of the following topics (a. through h.). a. Select a country other than the U.S. and describe its history of solid waste disposal.  The history of waste in Australia began many years prior to European settlements with the aboriginal populations. Waste having no pollutant value such as discarded shells, fish bones, animal carcasses, and stone tools where discarded in piles near the shores of lakes, rivers, and beaches (Waste Not, n.d.). With the British colonization came polluted drinking water and increased solid waste. At the close of the 18 th century and early 19 th century, refuse and other domestic waste was disposed of by citizens in home made cesspits and privies located in backyards of many residents. By the close of the 19 th century, growing population and urbanization created major problems with waste disposal leading to open pits and ocean dumping which was practiced into the early 20 th century. However, out of necessity, many items such as bottles, newspapers, clothing, toys and shoes were either reused, repurposed, or past on thus essentially creating what we know today as a recycling program. By the early 20 th century, the practice of incinerating solid waste was introduced as a solution for the public health concern created by previous waste management practices. In addition, legislation introduced in the early 1930s required solid waste dumped in the sea to be 15 miles past the shore further supported the practice of incineration (Waste Not, n.d.). The burning of solid waste in incinerators or by citizens in backyards became a common practice until it was restricted or banned due to pollution problems in the late 20 th century to early 21 st century. By the 1950s, engineered landfills constructed using US Army techniques from WW2 were put into practice which are utilized still to this day. With the late 1980s to early 1990s came a greater focus on waste management regulations, policies, and the need for recycling programs leading to the municipal waste practices of today.
b. According to our textbook, what are the differences between refuse, garbage, rubbish, and trash?
c. Describe EPA's integrated solid waste management strategy.
