Anth. 105 Human Species – Lab 2 Report Will 03/20/19 Introduction: Evolution is a key scientific topic and area of research in the present day. After all, it is through evolution that the human species was able to survive even the most tumultuous of times. Evolution is driven by four fundamental forces. These include mutation, gene flow, genetic drift and natural selection. A mutation is a change in DNA, which can affect an organisms looks, behavior and physiology. Therefore a change in DNA can change all aspects of a organisms life. Mutation is the ultimate source of new alleles in a population. Genetic drift is a force where allele frequencies in a population change solely because of chance. It a random process that can contribute to massive changes in allele frequency over a short period of time. Another force of evolution is gene flow. This occurs when there is a transfer of genes from the gene pool of one population to another. It can change the allele frequency because of a movement such as migration of individuals between populations. The final force of evolution is natural selection. This is a process in which the individuals of a population that have the best inclusive fitness (adaptations to environment) will survive and pass on their genotype. It
