Facts about Coral Reefs: Coral reefs cover less than 1% of Earth’s surface and only cover 2% of the ocean’s floor. Coral reefs provide at least ¼ of all ocean species with life. Coral reefs also provide for humans: “food, protection of shorelines, jobs based on tourism, and even medicines.” The Great Barrier Reef photographed on July 29, 2010 by Kyle Taylor

The problem: Global warming is causing water temperatures to rise, which causes coral bleaching- when corals lose the microscopic algae that produces the corals’ food. Acidification of seawater caused by an increase in the levels of carbon dioxide, which makes it hard for corals to build their calcium carbonate skeletons. Humans- overfishing and the overharvesting of corals. Great Barrier Reef photographed in Feb. 2016 by XL Catlin Seaview Survey
