The purpose of this experiment is to study the conditions to achieve static
equilibrium. We will familiarize ourselves with the principles of moments by
investigating the moments of parallel forces. Calculations of equilibrium will be
performed in order to describe the relationships observed in this lab. The different
variables and combinations to be observed in this lab with help conceptualize and
understand parallel forces and torque much better.
Verify the sum of counter-clockwise moments equals the sum of clockwise
moments when the external forces acting on the meter stick are in static equilibrium.
Find the center of mass, hang a 50g mass on the 10cm mark of the meter
stick and record the distance of the mass from the pivot position. Then,
find where to place an 80g mass on the other side of the pivot to balance
the meter stick.
Remove all masses from the exercise you just did. Place two 50g masses
about 10cm from each other on one side of the pivot and hang a 90g mass
on the opposite side of the pivot to help balance the meter stick. Record
the distances of the masses from the pivot.
