It wasn’t effective at first because of the altitude needed for defense. Strategy change to use low altitude flight and firebombs (napalm) Picked a stretch of land and torched. (90,000 deaths with that one attack) 900,000 people were killed in firebombing raids alone. (Japanese towns made of wood and had their military buildings mixed in with their civilian ones) Controversy Why is there a controversy over the dropping of the Atomic bomb? The racial canard -Originally built to drop onto Germany. Scientist wrote warning letter to FDR Einstein, Szilard, Manhattan Project- produced bomb in mid-1945 Russian penetration German failure to build a bomb Because of the number of deaths, the quantity? Because the atomic deaths were more gruesome, the quantity? Quality of deaths?- nope oftentimes a grenade would be worse. Were they morally novel?
