03-19-2007 Airmen’s view Schweinfurt, 8-17-1943, 10-14-1943 Military rationale USAAF rationale The plan- Wanted to knock out production, unfortunately some of their ball bearing production was in neutral countries and thus impossible to reach. It was a twofold plan, start with a raid on Regensburg to distract German forces, then a second force to hit Schweinfurt The raid Weather- terribly cloud so the raid was delayed P-47s- Fighter support planes, very small range due to fuel limits Radar and lack of surprise- due to delay the Germans were prepared at Regensburg and the Radar picked up the planes long before arrival. German fighters- very good, with good equipment, M8-109 FW-190 both extraordinary fighter plans “The Face of Battle;” Carnage and courage Air pandemonium- German fighter planes crashed into American bombers due to the confusion Planes and Human losses- Duration of the combat- six hour raid (second raid of sweinfurt), nine hour encounter Damage inflicted Schweinfurt- 20% of ball bearing production was destroyed
