February 25 th 1862: Year of Stalemate (ie CSA is winning) -The first Bull Run was a wake up call for the Union. They realized that the CSA was serious and then sent out calls to raise a massive army - Congress came up with Johnson-Crittenden Resolutions that were the declarations of the intents for the war. They stated that this was a war fought to preserve the Union as it was, not a revolutionary war. I. The East a. The peninsula campaign i. McClellan and Lincoln 1. McClellan brought east by Lincoln and given overall command of the land forces and the army of the Potomac. He was known for helping WV split from VA. 2. He was very criticized. a. He didn’t have much respect for Lincoln b. As a general he was very cautious, by the book. Obsessed with numbers. He got snippy and frustrated with Lincoln’s pushiness. c. Used as a foil for Lincoln, Lincoln is the good one while McClellan was the brash hasty one. d.
