AFAS AUTHOR DISCUSSION: SLIDE 1: Introduction - Hello everyone, my name is Kathryn Gibbons and my author discussion is about the poet, singer, author, and civil rights activist, Maya Angelou. In this presentation, I will be talking about her early life, career, and achievements. Then I will be analyzing and talking about this week’s readings and the themes that came about in this discussion. SLIDE 2: Early Life - Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri - Her parents got divorced when she was younger, so she moved in with her grandmother, and she experienced a lot of racism growing up. - When she was seven years old, she was visiting her mother and was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. Her uncles found out about the assault, and killed him, which caused Maya to be so traumatized that she decided to not speak and become a virtual mute. - In 1944, Maya gave birth to her only son when she was 16 years old SLIDE 3: - In the 1940s, Maya Angelou moved to San Francisco, California where she won a scholarship to study dance - Her singing career took off and she landed roles in different theater productions
