Phillip of Macedon Took over Greece Had an eye injury Argument over whether he is Greek or Macedonian- determines line of Greek culture whether interrupted or shooting straight back to Plato…etc Alexander the Great 356-323BC Comes to power at the age of 20 when father dies Takes over most of Europe and near east, reaching over to India in 13 years Longs to take over the known world Defeats Darius, emperor of Persia (Mosaic) On tract back from India, dies at 33 Hellenistic Period (after his death until conquering of Greece in 146) Then his land gets divided among his generals- creating tension and conflict- Hellenistic cities and states By 270 BC, near eastern world that has been drastically changed Greek culture has been spread all across the near east Pergamon (Attalid Dynasty) Conflict and tension gives rise to royal capital- new invention, most famous is Pergamon, capital of the Attalid Dynasty Over in Anatolia/Turkey How does it differ from Athens? Layout Main citadel on hill- highly elaborate Eumenes- does main expansion in Pergamon Gymnasium at base of hill Palace complex at very top of hill in the citadel- made up of upper and lower Peristyles- open area surrounded by collumns, gigantic, mosaics/marble/gold, couches for dining and entertaining
